Club Notes 11th - 17th of May Under 16: Last weeks Under 16 was postponed due to the death of Tom Canning. He was grandfather of that team’s goalie Jason Farry. Jason was very close to his grandfather Tom and we thank the Co. Board for postponing the game. Tom had nine grandsons playing at different times for Mohill Community College victories: The Community College U16s won the V.S. Connacht Junior Title last week and we were well represented with 12 Mohill boys on the panel. The score was 3-11 to 2-12 and the Mohill men were. Oisín Madden, Paul Foy, Keith Beirne, Jamie Cosgrave, Ronan Gordon, James Mitchell, Jamie Stenson, Keith Keegan, Alan Tuthill, Shane McGowan, Darragh Higgins, Jason Farry, Manager was Matt Gaffey. The ladies team led the way the previous week, winning the Connacht D Shield Final. Jerseys missing: There are underage and adult jerseys missing. These are very expensive to replace so we would appreciate if you would bring them to your next training session. Violet Tuthill RIP: We extend deepest sympathy to the family of Violet Tuthill who died last week. Her family were great supporters of the Club, her grandaughter Emma is a senior player while her grandson Alan is a wonderful young player with the under 16s. May she rest in peace. Scór: Our Scór Novelty Act performer magnificently to a large audience in the INEC in Kilarney on Saturday week last. The title could have gone our way with a bit of luck but it was not to be. We thank Padraig, Annella, Margaret and Maureen for the hard work they put in the last few weeks. We thank our faithful supporters who made the long journey to Kerry. It was an amazing experience for all who travelled. Until then nobody realised the amount of comedians we had in the club. Bornacoola's Quiz team won their second All Ireland title, we heartily congratulate them and we thank the County Scór committee led by Marie Mulvey and Seán Ó Suilleabháin that supported us in every way possible. Maybe next year! Minors: Our Minors lifted the league cup for the second year in a row on Friday last. Drumkeerin had beaten us by 16 points some weeks earlier so we started out as underdogs. All the players played their hearts out and it was a team effort but nobody will mind if we mention the lion hearted Ryan Bohan who was undoubtedly Man of the Match. Div 1: Our Senior team had a good win over Carrigallen despite being without the services of a lot of players due to work commitments and injuries. Tom Canning R.I.P: We extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Tom Canning from Towneymore who died on Sunday morning. Tom's son Michael and daughter-in-law Patricia are heavily involved in the club for many years. His grandson Gary is at present pur secretary. His other grandsons and granddaughter are playing on many of our teams,Caoimhe plays U16 and Senior ladies, Shane is on our senior team and has played for his county until this year, Caillin is a minor star, Gary is our goalie and Derek and Mark have played since childhood until they emigrated to America and Australia. Tom was very proud of his children's and grandchildren's many achievements. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé Down Memory Lane: This week's trip 'Down Memory Lane takes us back to 1978 and to a high scoring Minor Championship Final in which the Mohill-Gortletteragh coalition Lough Rynn Gaels lost out to Ballinmore on a 7-6 to 4-11 scoreline in Carrick. The Gaels top performers on the day were Sean Sorohan, Jimmy Ward, Eamon Duignan, Shane Heslin, Daivd Dorr and John Dugdale. The team lined out as follows: Thomas Keenan, Martin Kelly (M), Tom Howard, Gerry Dorrigan, Padraig McLoughlin (M), Sean Sorohan, Albert Dorrigan, Jimmy Ward, Tom Reynolds (M), Frank Flynn, Eamon Duignan (M), Shane Heslin, David Gordon (M), David Dorr, John Dugdale (M). Subs Used: Frank McGowan (M), Paul Flynn. Wing-back on that day 35 years ago Padraig McLoughlin is now our Club Chairman and has sons playing with us. Philly McGuinness R.I.P: At this time of year, our thoughts stray back to that fateful evening in Annaduff two years ago as we mark the anniversary of the death of the late Philly McGuinness. Philly may be gone but he will never be forgotten by those of us lucky enough to have witnessed his performances for both Mohill and Leitrim at both underage and adult levels. We will always cherish the memory of his bravery, boundless energy, stamina, work rate, wonderful skill, guile and scoring ability that all put together made him pretty much the complete footballer. It is fitting that out newly revamped park here in town has been renamed in his honour. Philly, you may be gone but we will always cherish you in our heart, both as a footballer and friend. Michael O'Connor R.I.P: Friday 20th of April, was a very sad day in Mohill as we bade a final farewell to a most popular young clubman Michael O'Connor. Michael was just 20 years of age at the time of his passing, having bravely battled illness for the past few years. This most likeable young gentleman first played the game he loved for Mohill at U12 level progressing up through the ranks to become a regular on our 2nd team before illness struck and had fate not been so cruel, he with his ability, commitment and great enthusiasm been by now surely a regular on our senior team. Michaels greatest moment in a club jersey would surely have been as captain he led us to a Division 3 U16 title five years ago. Michael, we fondly remember your marading runs from defence, your wholehearted commitment, scoring ability and great sportsmanship. To Michael's mother Ann and other family members, we extend our deepest sympathy at this most sorrowful time. County Teams: Well done to a number of club players who wore the Leitrim during the county senior and minor league campaign. At senior level Daniel Beck was an ever present fixture, at minor level, Eanna Madden was a regular centre back while Darragh Gordon, Caillin Canning and Cian McGuinness also saw some action while Nathan Conboy missed out through injury. Club Notes 20th - 26th of April Pillars of the Club: The club would like to contact past and present Players/Supporters/ Businessess in the hope that you may wish to be associated with the Park Development and specifically, with the sponsorship, particulars of which are set out below. What is proposed is that each sponsor would have erected and affixed permanently a plaque in their name affixed to the steel upright on the security fence (Click to view example of Plaque). Shield: Manorhamilton were our opponents on Saturday and after a disappointing display last week in Leitrim Village this was a big improvement and we had two points to spare in the end. Both teams were minus their big guns, Manor, their amazing amount of county players were missing, while we were short seven of our first team. Div 3: This game was played under lights in Cloone on Friday night. Our boys played out of their skins and won by a big margin scoring an amazing 2-22 in the process. All played well but young Alan McLoughlin had the best game of his career scoring from all angles. Barry Lupton had to be hospitalised after the game but thankfully he is okay and we wish him a speedy recovery. All Ireland Scór: Next Saturday will be an historic day for Mohill Club as our Novelty Act takes the stage at the All Ireland in Kilarney. This is a great achievement for the club and for the four participants, Annella McGuinness, Mgt.Healy, Padraig McLoughlin and Maureen Lynch. Break a leg we say to them and the same goes to the Carrick figure dancers, the Bornacoola quiz team and Aiden Dockery in recitation for the Bors also. U14: The U14s were defeated by a strong Fenagh side in the League Semi-Final on Monday night in Aughavas but as usual this team never gave up till the whistle blew for full time. Some of our team was absent due to sickness and injury but the boys gave it their all and we look forward to their Championship. Well done to their manager Seamus Kennedy under whose guidance this team has flourished and his selectors Adrian McCaffrey and Ciaran Baxter. We wish the very talented Fenagh team the best of luck in the final. Minors: We had an easy win over St.Francis also on Monday evening placing us in a good position in the league. Bon Voyage: Chris Higgins another of our senior players head off to Oz this week. Chris has played for Mohill since he could cross the hedge into the Park. We wish him happiness wherever he goes. Club Notes 13th - 19th of April U14: Despite being beaten by Ballinamore on Friday last our young men gave a great performance and should be very proud of themselves. Ballinamore were very good but our lighter and perhaps younger team gave it their all. Mikolaj once again pulled off some great saves. The back were kept busy fending off the Ceannabó forwards nevertheless we had great displays from Liam Rowley, Sean and Evan Harkin, David Mitchell and Man of the Match Dylan Gaffey. Our centre field fought manfully Fiachra McGuinness and Ethan Harkin who scored 1-5 out of the total 1-8. Our forwards Gavin Gordon, Ryan Murphy, James McNabola, Jordan and Jonathan Reynolds and Óisin Reynolds found the going tough nut never gave up. Div 4: This team drew with Annaduff on Sunday last in an entertaining encounter. Good displays by some veterans and young minors. David Wynne made a welcome comeback. The team was G.Canning, L.Cassells, S.Kilrane, M.McDermott, J.Barry, S.Kennedy, C.Baxter, G.Kelly, C.Murphy, D.Gordon, M.Lynch, J.Farrell, C.Conway, M.Beirne, P.Keegan. Subs Used were D.Wynne, P.Kevlehen, C.Canning. Pillars of the Club: Pillars still available at €100. Club Notes 6th - 12th of April Down Memory Lane: Down Memory Lane returns this week with a trip all the way back to October 1910 and to the final of an Aughavas tournament in which Mohill Faugh a Bealaghs beat Ballinamore by a point following an exciting contest at Corriga thus winning a beautiful silver cup and being met on their return to Mohill by torch- light procession and much cheering. The team lined out as follows : Paddy Maguire (Captain), Pat Gill, James Beirne, J Clyne, John Mulligan, Dan McWeeney, Patrick Reynolds, Benny Smith, Patrick Moore, Frank McWeeney, JJ Feelan, Paddy McKenna, E.Colreavy. M.P O'Connor, William Rowley, P.Early, J.P Fitzpatrick. Captain of this team Paddy Maguire is by the way great-grandfather of current club stalwart and former player, chairman, secretary, trainer and selector Brian Gordon. Condolences: Our condolences go to the family and friends of the late Joe Dugdale who passed away recently. Joe's sons John and George have given great service to the club and county over the years with George currently being the joint manager of the Leitrim Senior Team. To them, his beloved wife Anna, daughters Deobratla and Sandra, we offer our deepest sympathy. Our condolences also go to the family and friends of another great gentleman Willie Baxter who also passed away at an advanced age recently. Willie's nephew John Baxter has given the club great service as a player and more recently as a selector. County Minor: Our County Minors went down to both Sligo and Roscommon in the Connacht Minor League recently. Eanna Madden started against Sligo with Caillin Canning, Darragh Gordon and Cian McGuinness on the subs bench with Darragh being our sole rep against Roscommon coming on as a sub. County U21: Our county U21 team lost out to Sligo in the Connacht Semi Final on Saturday week last. Domhnaill Flynn and Johnny Mulligan started with last year's player of teh year coming on as a sub. Senior Scór: April 21, will be a momentous day for the club as our Novelty act team consisting of Padraig McLoughlin, Annella Mulligan, Margaret Healy and Maureen Lynch compete in the All-Ireland Senior Scór Final in Kilarney. The last time we reached the final was in 1988 when Gerard Canning won out in recitation. The last time we won a novelty act with Leitrim was away back in 1983. Remarkably, two of the current troupe, Maureen Lynch and Padraig McLoughlin were also involved in '83. Back in '83 along with the late Nicholas Cawley, the late Francis McGlynn, Martin Kelly and John McGuinness. Fundraiser with Katherine Lynch: A great night was had by all at our fundraising event on Friday night in J's Hotel. A special thanks to the Kilglass and Tarmon players for coming to Mohill to help us in our important money making effort. The audience was treated to great entertainment in the One-Act plays and sketches and the quick wit of our M.C Katherine Lynch who kept the crowd amused all night. The raffle was especially entertaining with the locals being subjected to Katherine's off the cuff comments. We thank all who helped make the night a success, those who moved props, made programmes, posters, tea, took reservations, sold tickets, manned the shop and door and our local actors who put a lot of work in planning the affair. Big thanks to all the faithful who came out to support. U14: These boys are flying high so far with two wins and a draw. The last game was against Manorhamilton and all boys played well and won by 8 points. Once again our goalie Mikolaj Sempka had a brilliant game a made a fantastic save from a well taken Manor penalty. Our forwards scored at ease and Johnathan Reycolds, Gavin Gordon, Jordan Reynolds and Jamie McCaffrey had good games as did Jordan McGuinness and Oisin Reynolds. The Harkin boys Sean, Evan and Kailon had their usual dynamic games and Liam Rowley, David Mitchell and Dylan Gaffey marked tightly while Ethan Harkin and Fiachra McGuinness lorded it at centre field. Our subs were Eoghan Keegan and Colm McGovern. Pillars of the Club: We are still selling the pillars for €100, and soon will be putting them in place. The team was: Ciaran Baxter, Brian Beirne, Paul, McLoughlin, Shane Kilrane, Eanna Madden, Colin Murphy, Darren McLoughlin, Cian McGuinness, Alan Armstrong, Paul Earley, Padraig Tighe, Stephen Flynn, Alan McLoughlin, Gavin Kelly, Conor Beirne. Nice to see Padraig Tighe back to full fitness after injury and sickness. Compliments also to Barry Lupton who although not playing was there to cheer on his teammates. Scór Sinsir. Club Notes 16th - 22nd of March Scór: Pride of place this week goes to our Novelty Act who are now Scór Co.Champions and will now represent Leitrim in the Connacht Final on March 24th in Elphin at 5pm. Taking part in the sketch were Padraig McLoughlin our Chairman, Annella McGuinness and Margaret Healy. Liz McGuinness also competed in the Solo Singing and did the club and herself proud. Joe Dugdale: The Club sympathize with the Dugdale family on the death of their dear father Joe who died on Sunday last. Both his sons John and George have starred for Mohill and Leitrim on the football field. Indeed Joe was the proud father at Croke Park in 1994 when George led out the Leitrim team after they won the Connacht title. George at present is joint Manager of the Leitrim County Team. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé. Derek Canning: Derek Canning, another of our dedicated footballers headed off to Australia last week. Derek has played at every level with Mohill. We wish himself, Kelly, Caitlyn and Rian a happy life out their in far off Perth where they join twelve more Mohillians who have departed recently. Minors: The minors had a good win on Sunday last against Carrigallen with a score of 5-8 to 2-6. The star of the show for the second week running was Niall Beirne who scored 4-3. Katherine Lynch is the M.C so a great night is promised. Club Notes 9th - 15th of March The Park: A very emotive moment when Barry Lupton and his three little girls led our seniors out for the first game on the new all weather pitch. Sandra Earley and Philly McGuinness two fine young athletes were in everyones thoughts as Fr.Pat Murphy blessed the grounds. We thank Barry and his extended family for making such an effort to be present. Barry had his usual good game and scored the first point on the new pitch. Once again we thank sincerely the Aughawillan Club who gave up home advantage and probable points to give us our day out. Tommy Murphy: The tragic death of Sandra Earley last week overshadowed the death of a Mohill stalwart Tommy Murphy of Treanmore. He was a President of the Club and played at corner back in the forties. His sons and grandsons have continued the tradition and have all played for the club. At present we have Colin his grandson on the senior team, David on the junior team, Paul is an underage coach, while Eileen Creamer his granddaughter acted as secretary for the past few years and had great input into the completion of our new pitch. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé. Claire Keenan: The club would also like to sympathize with the family of the late Claire Keenan nee McGarry. The McGarry's have been involved with the Mohill club for decades and her untimely death saddened the community. Her nephews and nieces have all graced the playing fields and her grand nephews Sean, Conor and Ryan are on underage teams. Simon McGuinness her nephew is an underage coach. May her gentle soul rest in peace. Minors: The minors gave a good display on Saturday last when they drew with a strong Manorhamilton team. Everyone played well adverse conditions. Club Notes 2nd - 8th of March Sandra Earley: All games and activities were postponed at the weekend with the news of the sad and sudden death of Sandra Earley, beloved partner of our player Barry Lupton. Sandra and Barry were a beautiful young couple, loving parents and both hard workers who were providing all the comforts of life in their new home for their three darling daughters Latisha, Jodie and Layla. This is and awful cross for Barry to bear at such a young age. Indeed it is a tragedy for the Earley Family who just ten weeks ago buried Sandra's mother Teresa. Good family and friends will support Barry and his young family in the difficult years ahead and both GAA Clubs, Kiltubrid and Mohill will be there to help if needed. Rest in Peace dear little Sandra. Matt Gaffey: Congratulations to Matt who has won a National Coaching and Development award. It will be presented to him on Tuesday next in the Raddison Hotel in Dublin. Well Done Matt. Fixtures: The fixture with Melvin Gaels was post-poned last Sunday following the death of Sandra. It would have been the first game on our revamped pitch. Aughawillan have kindly given up their homeadvantage to oblige and give us our day out on Sunday next. For that, the club is truly thankful. Hopefully there will be a large crowd and refreshments will be served in J's Hotel following the game. All are welcome.
